Grant Writing For Dummies

Grant Writing For Dummies Review

"Oh, that I might have my request,
That God would grant me the thing that I long for!" -- Job 6:8 (NKJV)

If you are totally new to looking for grants, Grant Writing for Dummies will save you a lot of time, effort, frustration, headaches, and expense. I have been dabbling in grant writing and knew that I was over my head. Any chapter of this well-thought-out book will be worth the book's cost to you.

I particularly liked the idea of becoming a grant reviewer, as a way to obtain a keener understanding of the decision-making process.

I was pleased to see that the book contains a complete example of a grant application narrative, which I found to be very helpful.

In addition, the author refers readers to lots of free resources (both online and off) that are sure to yield better opportunities.

I don't know how successful my future efforts will be, but I can at least be sure to be working on the right things in the right ways.

Thanks Dr. Browning!

The ACT for Dummies

The ACT for Dummies Review

I got this for my grandson to prepare for the ACT to improve his score. He wanted sample tests, but I really liked the test preparation because I'm convinced he knows the material. He just needed to know HOW to take the test and relax ahead of time. He did much better after reading the book. He's been accepted to U of A - Fayetteville, AR - Go Razorbacks!

The ACT for Dummies Overview

There's no escaping the ACT. Many colleges require that you suffer through the ordeal of taking this entrance exam before they will even look at your application. Some colleges emphasize ACT scores to compensate for grade inflation; that is, some high schools may give students A's for doing the same level work that would gain them C's in other high schools. Because the ACT is the same for everyone (students nationwide take the exact same exam), colleges use ACT scores to get inside your head to see what's really in there. Think of this as an opportunity, not a crisis – after all, good ACT scores can overcome low GPAs.

No matter how good your high school teachers are, their main goal is to prepare you for the real world – and not the world of the ACT. That's where The ACT For Dummies, 3rd Edition, takes over. Newly revised for the latest version of the exam, this book takes a substantive, but easy-to-understand, approach to helping you prepare for the exam, while at the same time presenting its information in the typical Dummies style – with humor and fun. If anything can make preparing for the ACT enjoyable, this book can.

Here's a sampling of what you'll find in The ACT For Dummies, 3rd Edition:

  • An overview of the test: Understanding the format and how the scoring works
  • Stress-busters: How to survive exam day
  • Things to double-check and things to avoid while taking the test
  • Reviews of grammar and spelling, algebra and geometry, reading, and science reasoning
  • Plenty of practice questions for all parts of the test
  • Three full-length ACT practice tests (no, not the real thing!)
  • Top Ten lists debunking ACT rumors, differences between the ACT and SAT, and true ACT stories

You know you have to take the ACT seriously; after all, it can determine the college you go to, which will, in turn, affect the rest of your life. (Talk about pressure!) So why not be prepared? With The ACT For Dummies, 3rd Edition, you'll be as prepared for the exam as anyone can be, and you may just have a little fun in the process.

    The ACT for Dummies Specifications

You've heard that performing well on your ACT can make up for mediocre performance in high school. But how can you ace it? Suzee Vlk, author of The SAT I for Dummies, can help. The ACT for Dummies is packed with useful information and strategies to help you prepare for the test. The book includes advice on how to use the book efficiently (Vlk estimates you'll need 19 hours to work through it), review chapters for all four sections of the exam, and two complete practice exams. In familiar Dummies style, Vlk includes a handy tear-out "Cheat Sheet" with a summary of the most important information and a "Part of Tens" section with 10 things colleges are looking for in their applicants and "Ten Dumb Things You Can Do to Mess Up Your ACT." With its witty writing, clear layout, and helpful icons in the margins to point out tips, tricks, and traps in the exam, and sample questions, The ACT for Dummies makes test preparation easy and relatively painless. --C.B. Delaney

    Economics For Dummies

    Economics For Dummies Review

This was a nice introduction to economics. Well written and immediately useful.

My only complaint was with the graphs, which were almost completely incomprehensible. This is mainly due to the 'Dummies' style of printing only in black and white. Other texts would usually use different colours to represent different lines. This may seem like nitpicking, but there is such heavy reliance on graphs in this text that if you can't understand the graph, then you are only getting half the explanation.

    Economics For Dummies Overview

If you think economics is a complicated discipline that’s reserved for theorists and the intellectual elite and has nothing to do with you, think again. Economics impacts every aspect of our lives, from what we eat, to how we dress, to where we live. Economics might be complicated, but it has everything to do with you.

Economics For Dummies helps you see how your personal financial picture is influenced by the larger economic picture. When you understand how what happens on Wall Street affects Main Street and how policies emanating from the White House impact the finances in your house, you’ll be able to:

    • Learn how government economic decisions affect you and your family
    • Make better spending decisions and improve your personal finances
    • Maximize your business profits
    • Make wiser investments

Written by Sean M. Flynn, PhD, Assistant Professor of Economics at Vassar College, Economics For Dummies covers all the basics of micro- and macroeconomic theory. The next time you need to understand an economic theory or calculation, whether it’s on the nightly news or on a spreadsheet at work, you’ll no longer be in the dark. Economics For Dummies covers all the history, principles, major theories, and terminology, including:

    • How economics affect governments, international relations, business, and even environmental issues like global warming and endangered species
    • How the government fights recessions and unemployment using monetary and fiscal policy
    • How and why international trade is good for you even if you don’t appreciate French champagne, Irish crystal, or Swiss watches
    • How the law of supply and demand can explain the prices of everything from comic books to open heart surgeries
    • How the Federal Reserve controls the money supply, interest rates, and inflation
    • Basic theories such as Keynesian economics, the Laffer Curve, and Adam Smith’s Invisible Hand

Presenting complex theories in simple terms and helping you decode the jargon, understand the equations, and debunk the common misconceptions, Economics For Dummies could be a big boon to your personal economy!
