Danse Macabre (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, Book 14)

Danse Macabre (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, Book 14) Review

Danse Macabre (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, Book 14) Overview

It was the middle of November. I was supposed to be out jogging, but instead I was sitting at my breakfast table talking about men, sex, werewolves, vampires, and that thing that most unmarried but sexually active women fear most... Anita Blake needs to be concentrating on a dangerous situation: The ardeur, the sexual power that flows between Anita and Jean-Claude, Master Vampire of the City, and Richard, the volatile werewolf who loves her passionately, is reaching new levels, perhaps evolving into something altogether new. The ardeur seems to be choosing new lovers for Anita, acting with a will of its own. As Jean-Claude says, the ardeur is hunting powerful prey. The unexpected effect of this is that Jean-Claude’s own power as a master vampire has grown to new levels - and Richard, never predictable, is changing, too. But as the days pass, Anita’s less interested in vampire politics than in an ancient, ordinary dread she shares with women down the ages: She may be pregnant. And, if she is, whether the father is a vampire, a werewolf, or someone else entirely, she knows perfectly well that being a Federal Marshal known for raising the dead and executing vampires is no way to bring up a baby…

Griftopia: Bubble Machines, Vampire Squids, and the Long Con That Is Breaking America

Griftopia: Bubble Machines, Vampire Squids, and the Long Con That Is Breaking America Review

Griftopia: Bubble Machines, Vampire Squids, and the Long Con That Is Breaking America Overview

The dramatic story behind the most audacious power grab in American history

The financial crisis that exploded in 2008 isn’t past but prologue. The stunning rise, fall, and rescue of Wall Street in the bubble-and-bailout era was the coming-out party for the network of looters who sit at the nexus of American political and economic power. The grifter class—made up of the largest players in the financial industry and the politicians who do their bidding—has been growing in power for a generation, transferring wealth upward through increasingly complex financial mechanisms and political maneuvers. The crisis was only one terrifying manifestation of how they’ve hijacked America’s political and economic life.

Rolling Stone’sMatt Taibbi here unravels the whole fiendish story, digging beyond the headlines to get into the deeper roots and wider implications of the rise of the grifters. He traces the movement’s origins to the cult of Ayn Rand and her most influential—and possibly weirdest—acolyte, Alan Greenspan, and offers fresh reporting on the backroom deals that decided the winners and losers in the government bailouts. He uncovers the hidden commodities bubble that transferred billions of dollars to Wall Street while creating food shortages around the world, and he shows how finance dominates politics, from the story of investment bankers auctioning off America’s infrastructure to an inside account of the high-stakes battle for health-care reform—a battle the true reformers lost. Finally, he tells the story of Goldman Sachs, the “vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity.”

Taibbi has combined deep sources, trailblazing reportage, and provocative analysis to create the most lucid, emotionally galvanizing, and scathingly funny account yet written of the ongoing political and financial crisis in America. This is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the labyrinthine inner workings of politics and finance in this country, and the profound consequences for us all.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season Eight Volume 6: Retreat

Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season Eight Volume 6: Retreat Review

In these five issues, Buffy and friends travel to Tibet so Oz can help them suppress their magical powers and therefore stay off Twilight's radar. Meanwhile, Andrew indulges in his documentary film making fetish once again when he believes one of them is a spy for Twilight; Oz's new life makes Willow jealous; and Buffy witnesses an odd encounter between two friends. When Twilight's army strikes, the Scoobies and the Slayers are forced into battle without any magical powers or super strength.

Although this sixth volume doesn't reach the greatness of the show, or even of the No Future For You or Wolves at the Gate arcs, it's still an improvement over the previous two volumes. I like how they spent time on characters here and sort of eased down on the ridiculous comic action for a bit. It was great seeing Oz and Willow together again, an odd but realistic romance beginning, and Andrew breaking out the camcorder (Storyteller was one of my favorite episodes of season 7).

If you don't like the season eight comics so far, stay away. There's still some pretty over the top stuff and I'm sure you'll not like this new romance that's developing. But if you have enjoyed them so far, keep reading, it's getting better!

Also, look out for the two 2-page stories at the end. Jane Espenson (who wrote the previous five issues) writes "Harmony Comes to the Nation" where our favorite ditzy vampire is interviewed by Stephen Colbert. And then there's Joss Whedon's "Always Darkest" which manages to be sexy, funny, and sad while having a few surprising cameos in just two or three pages. Both are fun little additions to this volume.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season Eight Volume 6: Retreat Overview

Buffy Season Eight Volume 6 showcases the first failure of the Slayer legion. Vampires have solid footing at the top of the totem and Slayers have been crushed to the bottom - in short, no one likes Buffy anymore... least of all this season's mysterious Big Bad, Twilight, who is hot on her magical trail! Now that it's the world against Slayers, Buffy must find a way to return the status quo to... status quo - and keep her girls alive long enough to do it! Enter Oz, the only person/werewolf Buffy knows who is down with the suppression of magic, and can take the Slayer army off of Twilight's magic-specific radar. With Oz's assistance the Slayers and Wiccans try to become "normal" through meditation and hard labor - although, not everyone sees the advantage of being magicless, namely, Willow, Giles, and Andrew. And they could be right; after all, is a peaceful life for a Slayer even possible?
