Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl Written by Herself

Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl Written by Herself Review

We all remember learning about the horrors of slavery from our history books while in school. This is different. This is a first-hand account of an actual slave named Linda as told to her friend Harriet and written by Linda. You will suffer along side her and relive the horrors she lived herself. While her story is among the better slave accounts (she acknowledges this), it is still not one that you should pass over without a second thought. You will feel every emotion, hear what she heard, see what she saw, fear what she feared, and live like she lived. The writer gives such vivid imagery that it is hard not to have empathy and feel as though you are there yourself witnessing the immoral actions and injustices our country once stood for. You will see her religious struggle of holding on to the concept of God. And you will feel her love for her children and the fear for their future. It was very hard to put this book down. I just wanted to keep reading it. I can't say much more, because others have pretty much said it all, but this should be a required reading in high schools around the country. If you read any book, make sure this is on the top of the list!
