The Servant: A Simple Story About the True Essence of Leadership Overview

In this absorbing tale, you watch the timeless principles of servant leadership unfold through the story of John Daily, a businessman whose outwardly successful life is spiraling out of control. He is failing miserably in each of his leadership roles as boss, husband, father, and coach. To get his life back on track, he reluctantly attends a weeklong leadership retreat at a remote Benedictine monastery.
To John's surprise, the monk leading the seminar is a former business executive and Wall Street legend. Taking John under his wing, the monk guides him to a realization that is simple yet profound: The true foundation of leadership is not power, but authority, which is built upon relationships, love, service, and sacrifice.
Along with John, you will learn that the principles in this book are neither new nor complex. They don't demand special talents; they are simply based on strengthening the bonds of respect, responsibility, and caring with the people around you. Perhaps this is why The Servant has touched readers from all walks of life—because its message can be applied by anyone, anywhere—at home or at work.
If you are tired of books that lecture instead of teach; if you are searching for ways to improve your leadership skills; if you want to understand the timeless virtues that lead to lasting and meaningful success, then this book is one you cannot afford to miss.

The Four Obsessions of an Extraordinary Executive: A Leadership Fable

The Four Obsessions of an Extraordinary Executive: A Leadership Fable Review

One of the series of leadership fables, Patrick Lencioni did not disappoint with this fable. As with The Five Temptations of a CEO: A Leadership Fable and Death by Meeting: A Leadership Fable...About Solving the Most Painful Problem in Business, just to name a few, Patrick Lencioni weaves an intrigue into a management lesson. Chapter by chapter you read to enjoy the story and never realize what business lessons are being planted into your mind for future reference.

It takes great talent to do this, not only once but at least 5 times. All in the series are great reads. The stories you want to read again and again. The best part is that you can complete your initial reading in one, maybe two hours time. Needless to day, as a study of business management, you want to use the books as training material for your leadership development and business skills education.

I enjoyed this style so much, I used it to tell my story for women wanting to break the glass ceiling. The leadership fable works, inspires and entertains. It inspired me to write A Woman's Ladder to Success Is Paved with Broken Glass Ceilings. Maybe it will inspire you to be a better leader, visionary, author.

The Four Obsessions of an Extraordinary Executive: A Leadership Fable Overview

In this stunning follow-up to his best-selling book, The Five Temptations of a CEO, Patrick Lencioni offers up another leadership fable that's every bit as compelling and illuminating as its predecessor. This time, Lencioni's focus is on a leader's crucial role in building a healthy organization--an often overlooked but essential element of business life that is the linchpin of sustained success. Readers are treated to a story of corporate intrigue as the frustrated head of one consulting firm faces a leadership challenge so great that it threatens to topple his company, his career, and everything he holds true about leadership itself. In the story's telling, Lencioni helps his readers understand the disarming simplicity and power of creating organizational health, and reveals four key disciplines that they can follow to achieve it.

The Four Obsessions of an Extraordinary Executive: A Leadership Fable Specifications

Allegories and parables have long been effective ways to impart serious bits of knowledge and wisdom without getting too pedantic, and business readers seem increasingly receptive to sensible management theory that employs this lively age-old literary technique. Obsessions of an Extraordinary Executive, a "leadership fable" by Patrick Lencioni, continues the trend with a solid prescription for organizational health--aiming for less politics, lower turnover, more productivity, and higher morale. Presented as a fictional tale of two technical consultants and their competing companies, the story is structured in a fashion that recalls his previous book (The Five Temptations of a CEO, whose main character and firm are even slipped into this narrative). Lencioni uses this hypothetical setting to show how his concepts might look and work in the real world. In this case, his "four disciplines at the heart of making any organization world class" are revealed and explained through the philosophy and behavior of Rich O'Connor of Telegraph Partners. Build and maintain a cohesive leadership team, create organizational clarity, communicate organizational clarity, and reinforce organizational clarity through human systems. Through his tale of Telegraph and its rival Greenwich Consulting, Lencioni illustrates how these principles can be beneficially employed--and how an organization can be stymied when they're missing. The story moves quickly and is followed by a comprehensive analytical summary, which includes self-assessment tools and suggestions for putting the ideas into practice. --Howard Rothman

Leadership: Theory and Practice

Leadership: Theory and Practice Review

This is a well written textbook that I am using for a graduate course I teach called Leadership Perspectives and Practices. It is far superior to the book that I previously used in both format and style. Author Peter Northouse writes clearly and concisely in a book that provides a basic overview of all major leadership theories, as well as additional chapters on timely topics such as women and leadership, authentic leadership and culture and leadership.

Each chapter includes several short case studies that illustrate the principles covered, along with sections that point out the strengths and criticisms of each theoretical approach. The chapters are well sequenced and the book has an author index as well as a subject index.

I highly recommend this fifth edition of Leadership Theory and Practice for use as a text or for anyone who is seeking a book that provides a serious study of core leadership principles and their application.

Leadership: Theory and Practice Overview

Leadership Solutions

Leadership: Theory and Practice, Fifth Edition is the market-leading survey text for leadership courses across disciplines. Author Peter Northouse combines an academically robust account of major theories, approaches, models, and themes of leadership with an accessible style and numerous practical exercises to allow students to apply what they learn about leadership both to themselves and to specific contexts and situations. The book is divided into fifteen chapters, which cover all of the key aspects in the leadership field: defining leadership; trait approaches; skills approaches; style approaches; situational approach; contingency theory; path-goal theory; leader-member exchange theory; authentic leadership; transformational leadership; team leadership; psychodynamic approach; diversity and leadership; culture and leadership, and leadership ethics. Enhancing the academic coverage are new case examples, questions for reflection, and leadership instruments and questionnaires that promote a more interactive and enriching experience for students.

Leadership 101: What Every Leader Needs to Know

Leadership 101: What Every Leader Needs to Know Review

After reading Maxwell's Success 101 and Attitude 101, Leadership 101 offered final advice on how to grow into a good leader. Maxwell offers his advice in an upbeat, friendly way, and he is sure to offer anecdotes for encouragement along the way. I hold a leadership position at work right now; I am the head intern. I am in charge of a group of four interns who turn to me for advice, both personal and professional, but I wondered why my leadership skills went unnoticed by them. I found that Part 2 of the book, The Traits of a Leader, was the most beneficial section for me. It helped me recognize the leadership qualities I was lacking. In this section, I benefitted from the advice on how to prioritize my life, and how to develop trust in my work relationships. It turns out that the reason many of my interns did not follow me as their leader is because I was not prioritizing their duties and I did not trust them to do a good enough job. Once I applied these concepts to my job, I saw a significant change in the way my interns were reacting to me.
While I do not expect to use all of Maxwell's ideas, he breaks them down into ideas that can be personally conceived. I found myself applying his ideas and suggestions to my life, and in a self-help book, there is nothing better than being able to apply the guidelines to my own life. Throughout all three of Maxwell's books that I read, I did not feel patronized or like I was being talked down to. I was able to understand what he wanted me to do because he used plenty of personal examples. If you are interested in ways to apply leadership in your career or your life, this book will give you good insight into how that should be done.

Self Leadership and the One Minute Manager: Increasing Effectiveness Through Situational Self Leadership

Self Leadership and the One Minute Manager: Increasing Effectiveness Through Situational Self Leadership Review

Ken Blanchard does it again. Situational leadership explained for the novice (and tenured) manager in less then 200 pages. Management and leadership are complex. Cookie cutter approaches no longer function in the workplace. Different generations and skill sets cohabitating in the same environment can be a nightmare. You can't even treat a tenured employee exactly the same if he is given a new task to perform. This concept is difficult for many managers to comprehend.

Self Leadership and the One Minute Manager explains the concept of situational leadership in a short story format that is simple to understand and apply. I've been through many leadership courses and this book takes a year long course and consolidates it into an easy to understand format.

This book can easily be finished in 1 to 2 hours with plenty of take aways.

Ronald Reagan's Leadership Lessons

Ronald Reagan's Leadership Lessons Review

This was a short and fairly basic, but pretty good, read about Ronald Reagan's leadership style. He basically summarizes Reagan's history, some of which I didn't know. He then went through Reagan's presidency and the major events during that time and showed how his leadership style affected the outcomes.

I enjoyed remembering the positive effect Reagan had on the mood of the country right after he was elected. I didn't learn all that much and it wasn't a challenge, but I enjoyed walking down memory lane of my college years and into young adulthood.

Ronald Reagan's Leadership Lessons Overview

Ronald Reagan was a product of America's heartland, a kid who had a Huck Finn childhood and never lost his aw-shucks, all-American optimism. He moved to Hollywood, became a minor film star, and got involved in politics-at first on the left. But in the shadow of the 1950s anti-Communism furor, he moved to the right and began a steady rise to the pinnacle of power. Initially derided as a lightweight, a none-too-bright actor incapable of leading a nation, he proved his detractors wrong. Using extraordinary charm, conviction, communication skills, and stagecraft, Reagan became one of the most beloved, admired, and influential presidents in American history.

Of all American presidents, few could match Ronald Wilson Reagan in the art of leadership. He knew America. Ronald came into office in 1980-when the national mood was glum and the future looked problematic (sound familiar?)-and he lifted the country's spirits on a wave of hope, purpose, and unabashed patriotism. In the years that followed, productivity and prosperity-at least for the upper and middle classes-increased at home, the Berlin Wall came down, and the Soviet Union collapsed, making America the de facto winner of the Cold War. Ronald's policies played a part, of course, but it wasn't just his management style that captured the heart of America. He brought something intangible to the national stage, an innate optimism that simply made Americans feel better.

The Practice of Adaptive Leadership: Tools and Tactics for Changing Your Organization and the World

The Practice of Adaptive Leadership: Tools and Tactics for Changing Your Organization and the World Review

Authors Ron Heifetz & Marty Linsky have used their 60+ years of combined teaching & leadership experience to compile a wonderful guide for anyone in a leadership capacity in any sized organization, to maximize their skills. It's consise, well-written & compelling; and quite possibly, could help some of the financially distressed organizations clean up their messes, without having to use taxpayers' money to help bail them out.

"Adaptave Leadership" has a Darwinian edge to it; and in fact, it is those leaders who are the strongest in the jungle of 21st century business, who stand the best chance for long term survival. In a free market economy, that's the way it should be; either lead the organization to become competitive, or go away. If I hear Stimulis Package one more time, I'm going to lose it.

Certainly, business needs to develop a more adaptive & flexible approach to running its operations; the leaders who are able to not only survive, but thrive in the real world will be deemed the fittest and reap the rewards.

Wanting more, wanting to thrive even under constantly shifting and often perilous conditions, people in all sectors are called upon to lead with the courage and skill to challenge the status quo, deploy themselves with agility, and mobilize others to step into the unknown.

Ron Heifetz first mapped a groundbreaking theory of leadership in the seminal book, Leadership Without Easy Answers. Followed by the bestselling Leadership on the Line, he and long-time Harvard colleague Marty Linsky offered a compelling set of arguments and stories to show how to lead and stay alive through the dangers of change.

Now Heifetz and Linsky, joined by Alexander Grashow, have distilled the learning from their combined sixty-plus years of leadership consulting, teaching and training around the globe into a practical hands-on guide to making your leadership both more effective and more powerful.

The Practice of Adaptive Leadership will help you think and execute amidst profoundly changing complexity. With its comprehensive and systemic approach to assessing candidly the situation and yourself, and then taking action, its wisdom and advice are drawn also from the experiences of people like you, committed to advancing what you care about most.

The book is anchored in the framework of Adaptive Leadership, but goes beyond the theory to provide a practical set of stories, diagrams, techniques, and activities that will help you both assess and address the toughest challenges that lie ahead.
