Good Boss, Bad Boss: How to Be the Best... and Learn from the Worst

Good Boss, Bad Boss: How to Be the Best... and Learn from the Worst Review

As a writer of management books I read other writers with competitive questions that probably are not on most readers minds: "Does this writer know something valuable that I don't know?" and "Is what he writes so valuable that employees are better off spending limited resources on his books rather than mine? Amazing as it may sound, I've yet to find the management book author for whom "I've" failed this test.

Notwithstanding my ego, I find "Good Boss, Bad Boss" an extraordinary, insight packed management book that I am recommending to clients and students and plan to purchase as holiday gifts for close friends. What makes it so extraordinary? Sutton "gets" people. Moreover, he gets human nature and knows what you should do, shouldn't do and not be foolish enough to do just because, for a moment in time Mr Boss, you have got the power to get away with a temporary cover up.

I find this book everywhere nuanced in the authors understanding of people. With staccato cadence, Bob Sutton presents one smart piece of advice after another as if he were drawing from a bottomless well. It made me want to get to know him better (we have yet to meet) so I could ask him questions bearing on what life experiences and situations caused him to become so spot on smart about people. Clearly he is and, to write it the way he does, to me signifies that he must also be terribly smart about himself. If you deal with people, and a lot of us do, I'm betting you're going to find this book an extremely valuable and enjoyable read.

Good Boss, Bad Boss: How to Be the Best... and Learn from the Worst Overview

If you are a boss who wants to do great work, what can you do about it? Good Boss, Bad Boss is devoted to answering that question. Stanford Professor Robert Sutton weaves together the best psychological and management research with compelling stories and cases to reveal the mindset and moves of the best (and worst) bosses. This book was inspired by the deluge of emails, research, phone calls, and conversations that Dr. Sutton experienced after publishing his blockbuster bestseller The No Asshole Rule. He realized that most of these stories and studies swirled around a central figure in every workplace: THE BOSS. These heart-breaking, inspiring, and sometimes funny stories taught Sutton that most bosses - and their followers - wanted a lot more than just a jerk-free workplace. They aspired to become (or work for) an all-around great boss, somebody with the skill and grit to inspire superior work, commitment, and dignity among their charges.

As Dr. Sutton digs into the nitty-gritty of what the best (and worst) bosses do, a theme runs throughout Good Boss, Bad Boss - which brings together the diverse lessons and is a hallmark of great bosses: They work doggedly to "stay in tune" with how their followers (and superiors, peers, and customers too) react to what they say and do. The best bosses are acutely aware that their success depends on having the self-awareness to control their moods and moves, to accurately interpret their impact on others, and to make adjustments on the fly that continuously spark effort, dignity, and pride among their people.

A Beginner's Guide to Day Trading Online (2nd edition)

A Beginner's Guide to Day Trading Online (2nd edition) Review

I took her Ch. 3 advice to consider 3rd party software and found a great one called StockVision (with real-time scans and a chat room to learn from experienced traders) that was far superior to my broker's platform. The book did an excellent job of first tackling the logistics of day trading and then proceeding into fundamental and technical analysis. Just 75 pages in, I already felt pretty knowledgeable about candlestick chart patterns! The book also provides a great introduction to the most important technical indicators to consider using like volume, moving averages, MACD, and so many more. It also contains great advanced chart patterns that I suspect few beginners are aware of.

I was also very impressed that one of the first topics she covered dealt with the psychological/mental aspects of trading. Later in the book, her example of a worksheet and trading log to use was especially helpful as well. Finally I was a big fan of the analogies and metaphors she used throughout the book, such as kind of comparing a consolidation pattern to something like a pressure cooker. It made helped make this book an easy read for a newbie.

Overall, it is a fantastic overview of day trading online and a great place to begin!

Strategic Stock Trading: Master Personal Finance Using Wallstreetwindow Stock Investing Strategies With Stock Market Technical Analysis

Strategic Stock Trading: Master Personal Finance Using Wallstreetwindow Stock Investing Strategies With Stock Market Technical Analysis Review

As a Canadian I trade on the Canadian Exchanges only, for tax reasons. I have been following Mike Swanson's principals of strategic trading that he has available free on wallstreetwindow.com for almost 2 yrs. His charts do not show the general Canadian stocks I trade in, but the patterns he displays are common in all stock charts no matter what company I research. This in itself has been a lot of help to me as I consider myself a novice. I read Strategic Stock Trading quickly and found myself recommending this book to my trading friends. When one of them ask me to lend it to him I realized that I would need this continually for reference and reread with a highlighter. I told him to get his own book he'll need it as a reference all the time.
It's hard for me to pinpoint a particular section or chapter as most of them have simple, good, easy to use advice for trade decisions that I need to root into my brain so I do not let emotions take control when I trade.
Having used Mike's advise in my trading strategy made money for me in the past.
Thanks Mike Swanson for this condensed well written book. It's a must have to make money in the market!

Strategic Stock Trading: Master Personal Finance Using Wallstreetwindow Stock Investing Strategies With Stock Market Technical Analysis Overview

Many say few know more about stock trading than Michael Swanson, who ran a top ranked hedge fund for four years and has built up a huge audience of readers on his website WallStreetWindow.com thanks to the accuracy of his market calls and investment acumen, including making over 50% in 2008 in one of the worst years for the stock market ever. His book Strategic Stock Trading demystifies the stock market by explaining what truly makes the stock market and individual stocks move the way they do and shows you how you can take advantage of it. The book explains the principles required for you to become an elite trader in the stock market, including what and when to buy and sell using the Two Fold Formula, how to manage risk, and how to be able to foresee real changes in the overall trend of the market before the crowd does. There are many investment books that describe aspects of technical and fundamental analysis. This one puts them together and shows you have to really use them in a strategic way backed by real life experiences and examples. It also discusses the psychology of investors in the market and how hedge funds and institutional investors now influence the stock market more than ever before and what the individual investor must do in this type of market to succeed.

    Liar's Poker

    Liar's Poker Review

This book is an excellent look at the culture of the 1980's investment bank, primarily, the now non-existent, Salomon Brothers. This book takes the reader through the training program at SB with the author Lewis. Liar's Poker does a great job describing the characters in this investment house as well as the insanity that occurs on a daily basis at the trading desks and the woeful decisions by the CEO's of these banks.

The look at SB was hilarious in its time, but now it is an excellent view of the creation of the Mortgage Backed Security and the large market of home loans that was created. This gives the reader a firsthand view of events that would eventually lead to the credit crisis of 2007-2009.

In standard Lewis fashion the reader is given an easy to understand explanation of complicated financial transaction and markets, even the unsophisticated person can read this book and understand the happenings of the markets.

I recommend this book; it is a great way to become familiar with Wall st and its interworkings.

    Liar's Poker Overview

The time was the 1980s. The place was Wall Street. The game was called Liar’s Poker. Michael Lewis was fresh out of Princeton and the London School of Economics when he landed a job at Salomon Brothers, one of Wall Street’s premier investment firms. During the next three years, Lewis rose from callow trainee to bond salesman, raking in millions for the firm and cashing in on a modern-day gold rush. Liar’s Poker is the culmination of those heady, frenzied years—a behind-the-scenes look at a unique and turbulent time in American business. From the frat-boy camaraderie of the forty-first-floor trading room to the killer instinct that made ambitious young men gamble everything on a high-stakes game of bluffing and deception, here is Michael Lewis’s knowing and hilarious insider’s account of an unprecedented era of greed, gluttony, and outrageous fortune.

Zero Limits: The Secret Hawaiian System for Wealth, Health, Peace, and More (Your Coach in a Box) Review

The most powerful words can change everything. They are "Sorry", "Forgive Me", "I Love You" and "Thank You". They are simple but very powerful. I said it all the time during the week I was reading the book and it just magically added color and light to my life! I think I have to remember them always and keep saying them in my life!

Zero Limits: The Secret Hawaiian System for Wealth, Health, Peace, and More (Your Coach in a Box) Overview

Zero Limits reveals the breakthrough self-improvement approach that is proven to help people who are overworked, overstressed, and just plain overwhelmed deal effectively with removing self-imposed limitations in their lives that are often manifest as chaos, disease, and poverty

Joe Vitale was once homeless. Now, he's the millionaire author of numerous bestselling books, an Internet celebrity, and an in-demand online marketing guru. What did he do to create all of that success? Was it hard work, divine providence, or both? The answer is surprising. It wasn't until he discovered the ancient Hawaiian Ho'oponopono system that he finally found truly unlimited success.

Updated for modern times, Ho'oponopono is a self-help methodology that removes the mental obstacles that block a listener's path, freeing his mind to find new and unexpected ways to get what he wants out of life. It works wonders both professionally and personally. It works so well in fact, that Vitale had to share it with the world, so that others could experience the fulfillment and happiness he feels every day.

Teaming up with Dr. Ihaleakala Hew Len, master teacher of modern Ho'oponopono, Vitale tells the listener how to attain wealth, health, peace, and happiness. They walk him through the system, helping him clear his mind of subconscious blocks so that destiny and desire can take over and help him get what he truly wants from life. It clears out unconsciously accepted beliefs, thoughts, and memories that he doesn't even know are holding him back.

Crash Proof 2.0: How to Profit From the Economic Collapse

Crash Proof 2.0: How to Profit From the Economic Collapse Review

Well, here we are in recessionville and the news is not good as of this writing. More stimulus and more spending are the only solutions in the eyes of our current government as the means to get us out of the financial predicament that has been with us since the Summer of 2008. Peter Schiff's Crashproof 2.0 gives us a look at what he foretold regarding various sectors of the economy, most notably the housing bubble which came to the fore in the form of the mortgage-backed securities debacle. Mr. Schiff also gives us information on other subjects as well such as the state of the dollar, stock market instability, consumer debt and the problem of consumption in general. There is also a guide to protect ones self from the economic uncertainties that are ahead. The main point is that he advised investment in overseas markets.

The book updates the previous Crashproof by adding various addenda throughout the book that serve as updates that occurred between the publishing of the original and the update. It seemed to me that the advice was mostly directed toward high-end investors that had a good amount of disposable income. However, he gave a few tips to those that are not as well off. He proposed collecting copper pennies and nickels, urged people to pay off credit card debt and invest in various foriegn debt instruments from Australia, Germany and Canada. A timely book, the information which I hope I will follow in the days, weeks and months to come.

The economic and monetary disaster which seasoned Wall Street prognosticator Peter Schiff predicted is no longer hypothetical-it is here today. And nobody understands what to do in this situation better than the man who saw it coming. For more than a decade, Schiff has not only observed the U.S. economy, but also helped his clients restructure their portfolios to reflect his outlook. What he sees today is a nation facing an economic storm brought on by growing federal, personal, and corporate debt; too little savings; and a declining dollar.

Crash Proof 2.0 picks up right where the first edition-a bestselling book that predicted the current market mayhem-left off. This timely guide takes into account the dramatic economic shifts that are reshaping America and provides you with the insights and information to navigate the dangerous terrain. Throughout the book, Schiff explains the factors that will affect your future financial stability and offers a specific three step plan to battle the current economic downturn.

    • Discusses the measures you can take to protect yourself-as well as profit-during these difficult times
    • Offers an insightful examination of the structural weaknesses underlying the economic meltdown
    • Outlines a plan that will allow you to preserve wealth and protect the purchasing power of your savings
    • Other titles by Schiff: Crash Proof and The Little Book of Bull Moves in Bear Markets

Security Analysis: Sixth Edition, Foreword by Warren Buffett (Limited Leatherbound Edition) (Security Analysis Prior Editions)

Security Analysis: Sixth Edition, Foreword by Warren Buffett (Limited Leatherbound Edition) (Security Analysis Prior Editions) Review

If you're an investor and haven't read security analysis, you really should. First, it is chalk full of very helpful information that is the only resource you need to understand investments. Sometimes it is dated but even then the history lesson is important. For instance, you will definitely be prepared for the next "idiot bubble" in the parlance of Charlie Munger because the book examines overvalued stocks and bonds with real examples. You definitely would never fall into the "real estate values have never declined" fallacy if you had the rudimentary understanding of history this book provides. So, all and all this book is a must read for serious investors.

So the material for this book is obviously five star... but I'm quite upset with the missing chapters and appendix. I don't think we need the additional commentary from respected value investors if chapters are missing. I had to read the missing chapters in .pdf on my Kindle DX which is sort of annoying. It would be forgivable if all the chapters we completely out of date but only the one on options was totally obsolete. So, the lack of a complete book was irritating.

I bought the book on the Kindle and in hardback. Get the hardback if you can afford it. It just looks better with all the tables.

Security Analysis: Sixth Edition, Foreword by Warren Buffett (Limited Leatherbound Edition) (Security Analysis Prior Editions) Overview

First published in 1934, Security Analysis is one of the most influential financial books ever written. Selling more than one million copies through five editions, it has provided generations of investors with the timeless value investing philosophy and techniques of Benjamin Graham and David L. Dodd.

As relevant today as when they first appeared nearly 75 years ago, the teachings of Benjamin Graham, “the father of value investing,” have withstood the test of time across a wide diversity of market conditions, countries, and asset classes.

This new sixth edition, based on the classic 1940 version, is enhanced with 200 additional pages of commentary from some of today’s leading Wall Street money managers. These masters of value investing explain why the principles and techniques of Graham and Dodd are still highly relevant even in today’s vastly different markets. The contributor list includes:

    • Seth A. Klarman, president of The Baupost Group, L.L.C. and author of Margin of Safety
    • James Grant, founder of Grant's Interest Rate Observer, general partner of Nippon Partners
    • Jeffrey M. Laderman, twenty-five year veteran of BusinessWeek
    • Roger Lowenstein, author of Buffett: The Making of an American Capitalist and When America Aged and Outside Director, Sequoia Fund
    • Howard S. Marks, CFA, Chairman and Co-Founder, Oaktree Capital Management L.P.
    • J. Ezra Merkin, Managing Partner, Gabriel Capital Group .
    • Bruce Berkowitz, Founder, Fairholme Capital Management.
    • Glenn H. Greenberg, Co-Founder and Managing Director, Chieftain Capital Management
    • Bruce Greenwald, Robert Heilbrunn Professor of Finance and Asset Management, Columbia Business School
    • David Abrams, Managing Member, Abrams Capital

Featuring a foreword by Warren E. Buffett (in which he reveals that he has read the 1940 masterwork “at least four times”), this new edition of Security Analysis will reacquaint you with the foundations of value investing—more relevant than ever in the tumultuous 21st century markets.
