Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything (P.S.)

Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything (P.S.) Review

This is an informative and entertaining attack on the conventional wisdom -- which is less concerned with the truth than with reinforcing popular political agendas. For the authors, one can only believe in the numbers, and they delight in demonstrating the counterintuitive through statistical analysis.

The most interesting insight is the thesis that the drop in crime rate in the 1990s is causally related to 37 million legal abortions occurring after Roe v. Wade: unwanted babies prone to crime who would have come of age in the 1990s were thereby eliminated. Such an argument is a nonstarter in a politically charged environment. But the authors do a great job of explaining it statistically. Also interesting is the use of statistics to catch cheaters -- teachers who want to improve school scores, realtors who sell out their clients to get a quick commission, assorted other experts who misuse their positions. I wished there was more discussion of forensic economics, which is apparently something that Leavitt does on a consulting basis. On the other hand, Levitt does analyze the drug dealer business and demonstrates that it is an enormous pyramid scheme, with those at the bottom being paid less than minimum wage.

There is an irritating tone of self promotion to the book -- as we are repeatedly told how great Levitt is. It reminds me of the what Catfish Hunter said when it was revealed that a new "Reggie" candy bar would be marketed to celebrate Reggie Jackson's arrival in New York. Hunter said: "The Reggie bar is the only candy bar which, when you open it up, tells you how good it is." The book would have benefitted from challenging the reader more, and indulging in a little less self promotion.

Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything (P.S.) Overview

Which is more dangerous, a gun or a swimming pool?

What do schoolteachers and sumo wrestlers have in common?

How much do parents really matter?

These may not sound like typical questions for an economist to ask. But Steven D. Levitt is not a typical economist. He studies the riddles of everyday life—from cheating and crime to parenting and sports—and reaches conclusions that turn conventional wisdom on its head. Freakonomics is a groundbreaking collaboration between Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner, an award-winning author and journalist. They set out to explore the inner workings of a crack gang, the truth about real estate agents, the secrets of the Ku Klux Klan, and much more. Through forceful storytelling and wry insight, they show that economics is, at root, the study of incentives—how people get what they want or need, especially when other people want or need the same thing.

Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything (P.S.) Specifications

Economics is not widely considered to be one of the sexier sciences. The annual Nobel Prize winner in that field never receives as much publicity as his or her compatriots in peace, literature, or physics. But if such slights are based on the notion that economics is dull, or that economists are concerned only with finance itself, Steven D. Levitt will change some minds. In Freakonomics (written with Stephen J. Dubner), Levitt argues that many apparent mysteries of everyday life don't need to be so mysterious: they could be illuminated and made even more fascinating by asking the right questions and drawing connections. For example, Levitt traces the drop in violent crime rates to a drop in violent criminals and, digging further, to the Roe v. Wade decision that preempted the existence of some people who would be born to poverty and hardship. Elsewhere, by analyzing data gathered from inner-city Chicago drug-dealing gangs, Levitt outlines a corporate structure much like McDonald's, where the top bosses make great money while scores of underlings make something below minimum wage. And in a section that may alarm or relieve worried parents, Levitt argues that parenting methods don't really matter much and that a backyard swimming pool is much more dangerous than a gun. These enlightening chapters are separated by effusive passages from Dubner's 2003 profile of Levitt in The New York Times Magazine, which led to the book being written. In a book filled with bold logic, such back-patting veers Freakonomics, however briefly, away from what Levitt actually has to say. Although maybe there's a good economic reason for that too, and we're just not getting it yet. --John Moe

Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl Written by Herself

Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl Written by Herself Review

We all remember learning about the horrors of slavery from our history books while in school. This is different. This is a first-hand account of an actual slave named Linda as told to her friend Harriet and written by Linda. You will suffer along side her and relive the horrors she lived herself. While her story is among the better slave accounts (she acknowledges this), it is still not one that you should pass over without a second thought. You will feel every emotion, hear what she heard, see what she saw, fear what she feared, and live like she lived. The writer gives such vivid imagery that it is hard not to have empathy and feel as though you are there yourself witnessing the immoral actions and injustices our country once stood for. You will see her religious struggle of holding on to the concept of God. And you will feel her love for her children and the fear for their future. It was very hard to put this book down. I just wanted to keep reading it. I can't say much more, because others have pretty much said it all, but this should be a required reading in high schools around the country. If you read any book, make sure this is on the top of the list!

Dealing with People You Can't Stand: How to Bring Out the Best in People at Their Worst Review

Everything was fine with the shipping of the book. But, I didn't like the book itself. It wasn't very detailed. I did glean some knowledge from it, I suppose.

Six Thinking Hats

Six Thinking Hats Review

De Bono has written and conceptualized a book with great ideas and actions that teach us to look at different angles of a decision making process. In the western culture we tend to argue for what we believe is correct, but De Bono states that we should seek all angles of attack. Everyone (whether for or against the situation) approaches the statement with a total of 6 different mindsets all working towards one goal. With this approach, all topics have been explored and everyone is "thinking on the same page". In doing so, the best decision is typically made with a significant amount of time saved for other topics of discussion.

Highly recommend this book if someone is seeking a more efficient way to run meetings and organizations. Instead of the typical argumentative approach, it now transforms into a cooperative thinking that lays out all scenarios. In turn it reduces the drama affiliated with the art of debate.

Other than that, The Six Thinking Hats is an enjoyable read that is easy to teach to others who are unfamiliar with the technique presented. The only downfall to this book is the excessive use of examples which become a little overwhelming that could persuade an individual to begin "skimming" the book. However, this is so small as compared to the theories that can help any team save time and effort.

Communicating at Work: Principles and Practices for Business and the Professions

Communicating at Work: Principles and Practices for Business and the Professions Review

The two coeds who have already reviewed this book are not aware of what printed gold they possess, judging by their reviews. This book is one they should carry with them throughout their working lives. Their biggest career mistake might be selling it back to the bookstore.

If they were here I would tell them how perfectly unproductive and boring it has been to have sat through hundreds of hours of boring presentations, training, and absolutely worthless, time-consuming meetings. The only bright side to such agony is that they have provided me with income, training people how to correct these limitations.

This book, editions 2 and 3 were the core of my experience learning communication skills. My first purchase was in 1983 or 4. (The 2nd edition was stolen). The book is divided into four parts: 1) Basics of Business and Professional Communication, 2) Personal Skills, 3) Working in Groups, 4) Making Effective Presentations. These parts covered many neglected skills such interviewing skills, from which I learned to teach interviewer skills and perhaps the most important of all, listening skills. The book also covers problem solving, conflict management, negotiation, and other essential skill-building topics. The last four chapters on presentation skills were the start point for my thesis. I can only imagine how much better the 10th edition is!

I highly recommend that you purchase this if you feel you are not effective at making presentations, running meetings, listening, or interviewing. I highly recommend this book if you feel you are effective at making presentations, running meetings, listening or interviewing. Many employees confided to me how badly their boss needed the training, while their boss told me that his employees needed the training!

This book is not just for students; it is also for the person already in business. It is also for those who think they won't need it. Studies show that even blue-collar workers will make some form of presentation at least four times in their lives according to the author.

Buy it, and treat it like an heirloom.

P. S. Professor Adler might not be happy at my adding this, but he is also accessible and his suggestions have been helpful. (That was before the Internet).

Communicating at Work: Principles and Practices for Business and the Professions Overview

Strong multicultural focus, emphasis on working in teams, and thorough coverage of presentational speaking continue to be hallmark features. The tenth edition features a more streamlined organization, new Technology Tip boxes, new Case Study sidebars, updated coverage of intercultural communication, new communication networks, and more.
