Blood Dreams (Blood Trilogy)

Blood Dreams (Blood Trilogy) Review

Loved the book. Loved the service. For people like me who don't have the time or the ability to get to the bookstore, Amazon is perfect. I've also found Amazon great for other types of shopping. Found a battery for my husbands electric drill that I was unable to get after numerous trips to several stores. Super!

Blood Dreams (Blood Trilogy) Overview

He’s the kind of killer we instinctively fear the most. A killer without boundaries, without conscience, without any fear of being caught. And his latest victim is terrifying proof that no one is safe: the daughter of a powerful U.S. senator.

Now, with the national media calling for justice and a grief-stricken father seeking vengeance, Bishop and his FBI Special Crimes Unit find themselves in a unique situation. This time even psychic cops aren’t enough to stop evil. Aid comes in the form of a fledgling civilian organization of unorthodox crime stoppers. Operating outside of any government oversight, without sanction or official authority, they are comprised of a membership every bit as talented and eccentric as Bishop’s SCU - if not more so. And that is no coincidence. For Bishop helped launch this organization barely two years before.

Dani Justice knows all about monsters. They haunt her nightmares - and her life. But she never expected to find herself doggedly on the trail of a real flesh-and-blood predator so cunning, he’s eluded the best law enforcement could send up against him; so deadly, he doesn’t hesitate to kill even a senator’s daughter. Or a cop.

Dani doesn’t want to hunt this killer. She doesn’t want to risk the life she’s made for herself, or her hard-won peace. But she doesn’t have a choice. Because his bloody rampage has hit far too close to home. Because Dani alone commands a weapon powerful enough to destroy him.

And because Dani knows something even Bishop doesn’t. Dani knows how the hunt ends. It ends in fire. And blood. And death.

What she doesn’t know is who will survive.

Thinking Strategically: The Competitive Edge in Business, Politics, and Everyday Life

Thinking Strategically: The Competitive Edge in Business, Politics, and Everyday Life Review

This is a terrific book written by two prominent researchers in the field of game theory who decided to bring their area of expertise to the masses. It fully deserves its bestseller status for distilling many of the most important concepts from game theory into a math-free format, with plenty of salient applications. Anyone who enjoys this book should be able to take something useful from it.

Thinking Strategically was required as a supplementary text in a game theory course I took as an undergrad; while I enjoyed the notation-heavy textbook, Osborne's An Introduction to Game Theory, Dixit and Nalebuff are beyond comparison in their ability to distill complicated problems into simple, intuitive solutions.

The Last Trail (Library Edition) (Ohio River Trilogy (Audio))

The Last Trail (Library Edition) (Ohio River Trilogy (Audio)) Review

This classic western tail of men saving women, while being a great love story is also a wonderful adventure story. A classic cowboy\borderman fights indian to save the helpless beuty, but instead of man saving woman, it is reversed, when Helen saves Jonathan from his own unhappy life. I have loved this book since the first day my mother placed it in my hands to read, and although the original has a few lapses in storyline, they kill someone twice, the basic story structure is enjoyable. Having read this book close to a dozen times, I can recommend that every person who has never given westerns a try read this one.

Self Leadership and the One Minute Manager: Increasing Effectiveness Through Situational Self Leadership

Self Leadership and the One Minute Manager: Increasing Effectiveness Through Situational Self Leadership Review

Ken Blanchard does it again. Situational leadership explained for the novice (and tenured) manager in less then 200 pages. Management and leadership are complex. Cookie cutter approaches no longer function in the workplace. Different generations and skill sets cohabitating in the same environment can be a nightmare. You can't even treat a tenured employee exactly the same if he is given a new task to perform. This concept is difficult for many managers to comprehend.

Self Leadership and the One Minute Manager explains the concept of situational leadership in a short story format that is simple to understand and apply. I've been through many leadership courses and this book takes a year long course and consolidates it into an easy to understand format.

This book can easily be finished in 1 to 2 hours with plenty of take aways.

Economics For Dummies

Economics For Dummies Review

This was a nice introduction to economics. Well written and immediately useful.

My only complaint was with the graphs, which were almost completely incomprehensible. This is mainly due to the 'Dummies' style of printing only in black and white. Other texts would usually use different colours to represent different lines. This may seem like nitpicking, but there is such heavy reliance on graphs in this text that if you can't understand the graph, then you are only getting half the explanation.

The Mentor Leader: Secrets to Building People and Teams That Win Consistently

The Mentor Leader: Secrets to Building People and Teams That Win Consistently Review

Football season officially begins tomorrow. What better way to kick it off than by taking a look at a book written by one of the NFL's most successful coaches. Tony Dungy spent six seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before taking a position as head coach of the Indianapolis Colts. In his seven seasons with the Colts, he led them to a total of 85 regular season wins and one Super Bowl Championship. But beyond that, Coach Dungy created in Indiana a legacy of excellence, integrity, and character that has come to define the Colts organization. Three of his former assistants have gone on to establish their own successful head coaching positions, namely Lovie Smith of the Bear, Mike Tomlin of the Steelers, and Jim Caldwell of the Colts. Now why is all this important? Because Coach Dungy has established himself as the very definition of leader, so when he pens a book on becoming The Mentor Leader, you know what he has to say will work.

The Mentor Leader is subtitled "Secrets to Building People and Teams that Win Consistently." It would almost sound too good to be true if Coach Dungy had he not already paved the way by practicing what he now preaches. He develops his entire leadership concept around the idea of being a mentor. At its very essence, Dungy is practically applying the principles of servant leadership taught and lived out by Jesus Christ.

Coach Dungy begins by giving the mandate of a mentor leader. Focus on significance. He urges us to value those we lead and keep an eternal perspective in mind. He continues with the mentor's mindset, which is that the mentor is there to serve and not be served. A chapter on the maturity of the mentor leader discusses dealing with the past and forgiveness. After this Coach Dungy urges us to find the characteristics that matter - character, competence, integrity, self-assured, authenticity.

The second half of the book turns to more practical aspects such as living the message of a mentor leader, using every opportunity to serve as a role model He teaches the reader how to cultivate a team culture in which individuals are made stronger by being a part of the team. He closes out with how to enhance the potential of those you lead - Engage, Educate, Equip, Equip, Encourage, Empower, Energize, and Elevate - and calling us all to look beyond the present win/loss column and into the standings that hold eternal significance.

As a coach myself, I learned a lot from this book. While already engaged in a form of mentor leadership in my own capacity, The Mentor Leader has helped me to correct my shortcomings, give confidence in my strengths, and gave a vision that what I do is more important than the now. I could literally discuss concepts this book covered and how I have applied or plan on applying them for hours. Probably the greatest thing that stands out to me was Tony's concept of building into the lives of those you lead. See yourself as the servant of all rather than the leader of all.

The Mentor Leader combines practical teaching with Tony's autobiographical anecdotes. The result is that football fans not only get a good idea of how to be leader, but also an intriguing look into the business of coaching football. Coach Dungy's memoirs, Quiet Strength, is what landed him a #1 NYT Bestseller's spot. The Mentor Leader builds on that, engaging the principles that made Dungy the coach and leader he is today. By continuing to live out these principles beyond the coaching arena, Dungy is transcending the sport of football and building into the lives of many.

The Mentor Leader is going on a special place on my bookshelf as soon as I finish working my way through it a second time. For anyone who holds any sort of leadership position, this book is an indispensable resource. For coaches of any kind - especially of children - this book should define how you coach.

The Mentor Leader: Secrets to Building People and Teams That Win Consistently Overview

“Your only job is to help your players be better.” That single idea had a huge impact on Tony Dungy when he heard it from one of his earliest mentors, and it led him to develop the successful leadership style so admired by players and coaches throughout the NFL. Now, a storied career and a Super Bowl victory later, Tony Dungy is sharing his unique leadership philosophy with you. In The Mentor Leader, Tony reveals what propelled him to the top of his profession and shows how you can apply the same approach to virtually any area of your life. In the process, you’ll learn the seven keys of mentoring leadership—and why they’re so effective; why mentor leadership brings out the best in people; how a mentor leader recovers from mistakes and handles team discipline; and the secret to getting people to follow you and do their best for you without intimidation tactics. As a son, a football player, and a winning coach, Tony has always learned from others on his path to success. Now you can learn to succeed for your team, family, or organization while living out your values—by becoming a mentor leader.

Raving Fans: A Revolutionary Approach To Customer Service

Raving Fans: A Revolutionary Approach To Customer Service Review

I recommend this book to friends who are marketing & sales professionals seeking insight into account management best practices. The elegantly simple 3-step process of "Decide, Discover, and Deliver +1" builds customer confidence and trust by consistently selecting customers who are perfect for your business and then perfectly fulfilling your promises to them. It provides a powerful framework to align the interactions of your marketing, sales, and operations teams.

My only complaint is the absence of emphasis on demonstrating and communicating your care/concern for that perfect customer during the entire process. Summarizing an often quoted research study, 68% of dissatisfied customers who voted with their feet (and selected a new vendor to do business with) did so because of a problem with their perception of the customer/supplier relationship. They felt that their former vendor simply did not care enough about them. I recommend adding a 4th step by following the advice in "Mr. Schmooze" by Richard Abraham to alleviate this shortcoming.

In spite of the above critique, I still rated this book a 5-Star Classic that all business leaders and marketing/sales pros should read.
